Introduction
Survivors of domestic violence often carry invisible wounds long after the physical ones heal. What they need more than anything is a strong, steady support system. Just being there to listen, checking in and offering a safe space, can make a world of difference.
It’s important to understand that leaving an abusive situation is not as simple as walking away. Many survivors return to their abusers, not because they want to, but because they feel they have no other choice emotionally, financially, or even socially. That’s why support must go beyond sympathy.
We must help them get back on their feet:
- Financially, by connecting them with job opportunities or resources to become self-sufficient.
- Physically, by ensuring they have a safe place to stay and access to health care.
- Emotionally, by encouraging them to speak to a therapist or join a support group.
Most importantly, let them know they are not alone. Healing takes time, and our continued presence in their lives can be the anchor they need to rebuild their lives with confidence and hope.
